Organ Donation
While
many New Zealanders are listed as organ donors, it should be noted
that organ donations are very difficult to achieve.
The main reason for this is that except for corneal grafts or
transplants, the donor must die in an intensive care unit.
Essentially the donor must be kept artificially alive until the
organ can be removed. Corneal transplants are done by an eye
surgeon and in the case of an expected death arrangements should be
in place with your local hospital.
When a person has died suddenly or in an accident and must
undergo an autopsy, organ donation cannot take place.
